 | | | Confederate States of America 1862 (Low Certificate #59) - George Washington Vignette - Ball #48 | Beautiful certificate #59 from the Confederate States of America dated May 19, 1862. This historic document was printed by Hoyer & Ludwig of Richmond, Virginia and has an
ornate border around it with a vignette of George Washington. This certificate has been hand signed by the Registry of the Treasury, Robert Tyler and initialed by Henry Dickson Capers. There were only 628 of these bonds issued but it is unknown how many survived over the years. Minor Folds, worn edges on sides, light toning. Overall in Fine Condition. This bond is very hard to find and would look terrific framed. 6 coupons attached on bottom (The next coupon to be clipped was dated July 1, 1865, 3 months after the Civil War ended).
Certificate Vignette
The bond was issued under the Confederate Congress Act of August 19, 1861. George Washingtion was featured because he was the first president of the United States and was from Virginia. Robert Tyler (1816-1877), the Registry of the Treasury, was a son of U.S. President John Tyler by his first wife. Tyler was head of the Democratic party in Pennsylvania and a personal friend of President James Buchanan before he had to flee to the Confederacy. Through his father's influence, he procured the post of Register of the Treasury, which he held from August 13, 1861 to the end of the war. After the war Tyler moved with his family to Alabama, where he became a newspaper editor. He also became the head of the Democratic Party in Alabama. Henry Dickson Capers was a reporter for a Charleston newspaper at Montgomery when C. G. Memminger hired him as his chief clerk. Capers held this job for the one year's duration of the Provisional Congress, before he left to join the artillery.
