 | | | Suisun City Hotel Company 1889 - Solano County, California | Beautifully engraved certificate from the Suisun City Hotel Company in 1889. This historic document was printed by Payot, Upham and Co. S.F. and has an ornate border around it This item has the hand signatures of the Company’s President ( R. D. Robbins ) and its Secretary ( Moses Dinkelspiel ) and is over 114 years old.
The Suisun City Hotel Co. was incorporated in California 1889. In 1868, Suisun was incorporated as a city named after a local Indian tribe.
R. D. Robbins - Born in Bodingham, Maine in 1839, Revel Drinkwater Robbins came to California in 1860 where he found work as a day laborer in Suisun. In May 1862 he purchased a one-half interest in a Suisun lumber yard and eventually bought his partner’s interest. After his marriage to Saditha Mc Cullah, he established the bank of Suisun and served as its president until his death in 1919. By then, his personal wealth included large farming operations in Solano County as well lumber interests in Tuolomne County. At the time of his death, his estate was appraised at $5,700.098.
In 1876, Jacob and Moses Dinkelspiel built a General Store in Bird's Landings. The general store proved to be Bird's Landings most successful enterprise.
The Dinkelspiels are one of the oldest Jewish families in the Bay Area. John Dinkelspiel was the grandson of Moses Dinkelspiel. Born in San Francisco, John Dinkelspiel graduated from Harvard Law School in 1926 and joined his father and brother in the local law firm Dinkelspiel and Dinkelspiel. Jewish organizations often consulted Dinkelspiel on legal matters. Dinkelspiel played a prominent role in the Republican Party in California. He was close friends with Richard Nixon, working on his successful 1950 Senate race, the 1952 Eisenhower-Nixon presidential campaign and the 1960 Nixon-Lodge presidential bid, lost to the Kennedy-Johnson ticket. John Dinkelspiel moved to Atherton, California in the early 1950s and was heavily involved in local politics, which finally culminated in his serving as mayor from 1982 to 1986.
