Fuqua never attended college, he has emerged as one of nation's most prominent philanthropists and supporters of education. Fuqua grew up on a tobacco farm in Virginia where he was raised by his maternal grandparents after his mother died when he was two months old. Unable to afford college, he taught himself history, business and finance by reading books borrowed by mail from the Duke University Library. In the 1950s, he purchased a tiny brick manufacturing company and built it into a multibillion-dollar conglomerate called Fuqua Industries. Today, he is an active philanthropist with lifetime giving totals of more than $100 million.
